Spokane Suicide, Death – Two Men Found Dead In Spokane Home
Spokane Suicide – Two men found dead inside a Hillyard home in Spokane, Washington, on August 12 have been identified, with the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office determining that the deaths involved homicide and suicide.
The victims were identified as Jibin “Mark” Fan, 51, and Joshua Rathbun, 34.
According to the medical examiner, Fan died from blunt-force injuries to the head, and his death was ruled a homicide. Rathbun’s death was ruled a suicide caused by the toxic effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine.
The circumstances surrounding Fan’s death remain under investigation.
Spokane police officers responded to the residence at approximately 1 p.m. on August 12 after receiving a report concerning an unattended death.
The home was identified in court documents as being on N. Cook Street in Spokane’s Hillyard neighborhood.
Officers discovered Fan deceased and bleeding from the head inside a garage. According to court records, investigators believed he had been dead for several hours before authorities arrived.
During their search of the residence, officers also discovered Rathbun deceased inside a locked bedroom in the basement.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Fan died from blunt-force trauma to the head and classified his death as a homicide.
The ruling prompted investigators to examine the circumstances surrounding his death and determine who may have been responsible.
Search-warrant documents filed in Spokane County Superior Court indicated that detectives were investigating Rathbun in connection with a potential second-degree murder involving Fan.
However, investigators have not indicated that anyone else remains at large or poses an ongoing threat to the public.
The medical examiner determined that Rathbun died by suicide from the toxic effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine.
Police reportedly discovered evidence inside his basement bedroom that contributed to the investigation into his death.
According to court documents, detectives found drugs and drug paraphernalia, open pill bottles, and handwritten letters that appeared to contain suicidal thoughts.
Investigators also documented minor scratches and abrasions on Rathbun’s torso, face, and elbow that appeared to be recent.
During the search of the residence, detectives reportedly found a small backpack near Rathbun’s body.
Inside the backpack, investigators located a mallet covered in blood.
The discovery became part of the evidence examined as detectives investigated Fan’s death.
Because the investigation remains ongoing, the presence of the mallet and other evidence should not be interpreted beyond what investigators and court records have established.
Spokane police spokeswoman Officer Tricia Leming said detectives continue to investigate the case.
According to the information provided, investigators have found nothing indicating that another person involved in the deaths remains unaccounted for.
That statement provides some reassurance to residents who may have been concerned after learning that two people had died at the same residence.
Nevertheless, detectives continue examining the available evidence to establish the complete circumstances surrounding Fan’s death.
The deaths of Fan and Rathbun present a complicated set of circumstances for investigators.
One man died from injuries classified as homicide, while the other died by suicide. Investigators are now working to understand the sequence of events that preceded both deaths.
The investigation has included examination of the residence, physical evidence, medical findings, and information contained in search-warrant documents.
As the case develops, authorities may release additional information about what occurred inside the home.
Beyond the investigation, the deaths represent two separate losses for families, friends, and people who knew the men.
Fan’s family and loved ones are left grieving a death that authorities have determined was caused by another person.
Rathbun’s death also highlights the devastating consequences that can accompany severe substance use and suicidal distress.
While the circumstances are being investigated, both individuals deserve to be remembered as people whose lives extended beyond the events surrounding their deaths.
Spokane police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Fan’s homicide and the events leading to both deaths.
The medical examiner’s findings establish the reported causes and manners of death, while investigators continue working to determine the full sequence of events.
Because this is an active investigation, additional conclusions should wait for official findings.
